Master’s and Doctoral Degree

Master’s and Doctoral Degree Programs

The curricular structure of PPGEF follows a quarter system, together with other UFSC graduate programs, to ensure the regular provision of specific courses in each program and to facilitate academic exchange among the university’s various graduate courses.

Master’s degree program

A total of 30 credits are required for the master’s degree, including 8 credits in required courses, 16 credits in elective courses, and six credits for the development of a master’s thesis.

The program, which is structured to be completed in approximately 24 months, begins with the assignment of a supervisor in a specific area and line of research, which allows for the planning of the activities to be developed by the master’s student throughout the course of their studies.

Regular admission to the PPGEF master’s program is subject to a selection process. In general, a call for applications is released between May and June, and registration takes place in August. The first and second stages of the selection process occur between September and October, with the final result being released at the end of October or in early November. Admission usually takes place at the beginning of March of the following year.

Briefly, the sequence of steps to complete the master’s program is as follows:

  1. Admission to the master’s program – definition of the concentration area, line of research and supervisor. Foreign language proficiency requirement.
  2. Study plan – supervisor and student
  3. Completion of course credits (total: 24 credits, including 8 in required courses) and other research activities
  4. Qualifying examination
  5. Thesis development
  6. Thesis defense
  7. Delivery of the final draft of the thesis and the thesis article

Admission to the PPGEF master’s program does not guarantee the student will receive a scholarship, since the distribution of scholarships by the program is carried out through a specific selection process. Scholarship applications are open in mid-February.

Doctoral degree program

A total of 60 credits are required for the doctoral degree, including 12 credits in required courses, 36 in elective courses and 12 for the development of a doctoral dissertation. The program is structured to be completed in approximately 48 months.

The doctoral program requires proficiency in two foreign languages ​​- one upon admission and the second before the end of the first year of the program. A qualifying examination must be taken after completion of the credits and activities provided for in the PPGEF Bylaws and other specific rules.

Briefly, the sequence of steps to complete the doctoral program is as follows:

  1. Admission to the doctoral program – definition of the concentration area, line of research and supervisor. Foreign language proficiency requirement.
  2. Study plan – supervisor and student
  3. Completion of course credits (total: 48 credits, including 12 in required courses) and other research/publication activities
  4. Second foreign language proficiency test
  5. Qualifying examination
  6. Dissertation development
  7. Dissertation defense
  8. Delivery of the final draft of the dissertation and the dissertation article

Admission to the PPGEF doctoral program does not guarantee the student will receive a scholarship, since the distribution of scholarships by the program is carried out through a specific selection process. Scholarship applications are open in mid-February. In the case of the doctoral program, supplementary calls for applications may be opened throughout the year, considering that admission to the program takes place at any time of the year.
